New research reveals that almost £9.5 billion is forecast to be spent online this Christmas, with over three quarters (79%) of people planning to shop online for all or some of their gifts. The average online shopper expects to spend £245, up 8% from 2010.

Almost two thirds (65%) will do so to save money, over a third (35%) to take advantage of free delivery and 30% because of the speed and convenience of shopping online. However, only 17% of shoppers prioritise buying from a trusted brand or website.

Worryingly, despite online shopping being the norm for most shoppers, many are still failing to take basic safety measures – with one in five admitting to using the same password for various sites and around two and a half million people (five per cent) do not take ANY precautions to protect themselves when shopping online.

. Introduction:

There are just under 4 weeks until Christmas and during this time the majority of us collectively expect to avoid the high street and spend a record £9.5 billion online.

However, new research reveals that online shoppers are putting savings before safety. Over two million of us don't take simple measures like checking the websites we're buying from and over a third (36%) the padlock icon when making a payment (although they know what it is). Christmas can be an expensive time but for many who don’t take their security seriously, it could be far more costly than they anticipate.

So, how can we stay safe and avoid the online pitfalls?
