This year’s Toast Census has revealed the nation’s toast habits. An estimated 94.2 million slices of toast are consumed each year in the UK, with the average Brit eating two slices per day and 91% eating toast on a regular basis.

83% mainly eat toast for breakfast, but almost half (44%) admit they eat toast as a snack throughout the day – with the nation’s favourite topping being ‘just butter or margarine’. Moreover, when choosing brown bread, 73% prefer bread ‘with bits’ and 94% admit they do eat the crusts.

Almost three quarters (72%) believe that toast is the ultimate comfort food, with 68% admitting to eating toast in bed. Other popular locations to eat toast are on the way to/from work (43%), on holiday abroad (63%) and even in the bath (7%). These Census results have provoked a Toast Charter to be formed which pledges a whole host of initiatives including the first crumb free loaf, giving up your bus seat for a toast eating commuter and discovering whether there really is a link between eating crusts and curly hair.
