August 16th is the day thousands of 18 year olds will be tearing open their A-Level results - it’s also the day we’ll be investigating what happens next for the teenagers who can’t get in, or can’t afford, or don’t want to go to University.

Grades in 2011 were the highest ever, with one in twelve exams getting an A* - but government stats show one in seven 18 years olds (15%) are classified as NEET, that’s not in education, employment or training, which, like A-level results, is a figure that keeps getting higher year on year.

With the rising cost of tuition fees becoming an issue, what are the alternatives for teenagers after they’ve opened up their results? And how do they go about making the most of any opportunities there are in the midst of a double-dip recession?
