  News Hooks:

A report urging the government to put an end to institutional care has been launched – prompted by the abusive, cruel and violent treatment of those with learning disabilities uncovered by Panorama earlier this year. The investigation which used hidden cameras highlighted the extent to which staff in care institutions were taking advantage of society’s most vulnerable members.

A new report, ‘There is an Alternative,’ champions community based support - integrating citizens with their local communities and avoiding any potential discrimination. They say this will enhance personal rights and evade any psychological or physical harm, witnessed in the most extreme, scandalous cases. The report has used real life examples of those who were removed from institutions and cared for by support workers in their own homes to prove, not only is this a cheaper option of care but moreover, safer and vastly more life enriching.

The Brandon Trust - a charity who are a member of The Association for Supported Living, responsible for the report, are backing the movement for change. They are running a series of local events throughout November across the South West to raise awareness of independent living for those with learning disabilities. From a Hat Parade, encouraging people to Break out their Bowler or strut their Stetson to ‘Brandon’s Got Talent,’ where people with learning disabilities will showcase their talents!

. Introduction:

Earlier this year a Panorama investigation brought to light the abusive, cruel and damaging treatment of vulnerable people in Winterbourne View care unit, Bristol. Since then a report has been released to urge the Government to abolish these institutions, championing community based support. They have proven that by giving people with learning disabilities as much independence as possible, it isn’t only cheaper but also vastly more life enriching. The Brandon Trust, a South West based charity supporting the initiative are holding awareness raising local events throughout November – encouraging everyone to get involved!
