A new report suggests three quarters of the UK are planning to retire with nothing more than a state pension to look after them in their old age.

The study by Mintel puts the figure at 74% - an estimated 37-and-a-half million adults; and the research shows how a third are anxious about their retirement funds with a quarter saying they’re unsure how they’ll make ends meet once they hit their mid-60s. It’s also been discovered that people with mortgages are more likely to have concerns about their finances during retirement compared to those who own their property outright.

The study poses big questions for the coalition government – especially as we find out how one in six UK adults haven’t given any consideration to retirement plans or provisions; and as more people take mortgage debt into their retirement, financial experts are now urging the UK to start planning for their old age.
