Every hour, 12 vehicles are stolen from somewhere across England and Wales – that’s one every 5 minutes.

Despite a fall of 9% compared to last year, there were 99,810 thefts or unauthorised takings of motor vehicles in 2011.

But more still needs to be done to tackle vehicle theft, especially as we find out that one in ten Brits say they are seriously worried about car crime, but today, a brand new piece of technology has been launched. Known as ‘The Mesh Network’, it’ll enable car drivers to play an active role in helping combat vehicle theft; it uses technology to create a social network to extend the eyes and ears of the police and report where stolen cars are.

A new piece of technology has been launched today to help drivers unite to create a social network against vehicle theft – but what will this mean for our fight against crime?
