New research reveals that around 10.7 million Brits could be at risk of having their credit card declined when trying to buy an item or service abroad, as a result of not informing their card provider that they intend to use it whilst they are away.

The majority of cardholders (45%) do not inform their provider if they're going abroad and a further 2.99 million people only let their provider know if they are planning to travel to certain countries outside of the UK.

3.6 million people, approximately one in 10 credit cardholders, have had their credit card declined whilst trying to use it overseas. Banks are using increasingly sophisticated fraud intelligence systems to help identify unusual patterns of spending or high-risk transactions on cards, in order to protect their customers, but this can mean that legitimate overseas transactions can sometimes be declined.

. Introduction:

Most of us have worried about credit card fraud at some point, and rightly so, Brits are three times more likely to be a victim of card fraud than burglary. Our banks are using sophisticated fraud intelligence systems to combat fraud but sometimes our own legitimate transactions can be turned down. Under 4 million people have had their credit card declined whilst trying to use it overseas because they have not notified their provider that they're going abroad, with a further near 11 million at risk of their card being declined.

So what is the best advice for credit card users planning to go abroad?
