Latest figures reveal that every year, 30 children between the ages of 0 to 11 years old are killed when travelling in cars, over 7000 are injured and around 400 are seriously injured. In a 30mph crash, an unrestrained child would be thrown forward with a force 30 to 60 times their body weight, injuring themselves, other passengers or more severely being ejected from the car through one of the windows.

Despite changes to the law in 2006 regarding travelling with children, 73% of mothers are still unaware of what the current legislation is and almost three quarters admit that they could be breaking the law without knowing it.

70% of child car seats are still fitted incorrectly with 51% of mums admitting they have no idea how to check if their child seat is correctly fitted. Less than half of parents (49%) are confident about fitting their car seat alone, 11% found it difficult and one in 10 gave up.

. Introduction:

This National Child Travel Week (19th – 25th July 2010), research reveals that thousands of children are injured every year when travelling as car passengers. New legislation was introduced in 2006 to protect children but the majority of mums who were asked were unaware of the current laws and admitted that they could be breaking the law without knowing it. There is also a lack of confidence when it comes to installing child seats correctly as nearly three-quarters of seats are incorrectly fitted putting children in danger on car journeys.

Why are so many children being put at unnecessary risk?

Joining us to discuss this further is Bill Giles from the Child Accident Prevention Trust and Jackie Elsworth, a Child Seat Installation Expert with over 10 years experience in fitting car seats at Halfords.
