What's our Favourite Radio Show and why?

Posted by Brittany on 18 January 2012

Every week I'm going to be collecting blogs from the team about radio news, radio secrets, our thoughts on the industry and revealing the answers on our blog.

So this week, to kick us off, I've asked:

'What's your favourite radio show, and why?'
Here are the answers... enjoy.

My favourite radio programme would have to be The XFM Breakfast Show with Danny Wallace. It’s a much cooler version of what Chris Moyles does on Radio 1. I think they get the balance between chat and talk just about right – which a lot of programmes don’t do. The type of music is normally pretty good too – right up my street. Danny Wallace is a funny guy and the team that present with him add a lot to the mix. It’s the perfect programme to ease you into the working day. Not too loud and shouty (who wants that first thing in the morning!) but loud enough to wake you up and get you going.

The style of radio I enjoy is when there are multiple voices in the studio. I’m not so keen on the one-presenter set-up, as I feel they are talking directly to me, and therefore I feel rude when I don’t pay attention and scratch my nose, or if I miss something I think they are being rude when I politely ask them to repeat themselves and they just keep talking as if I’m not there. No one wins. I prefer the idea that I am eavesdropping on some ‘banter’ (now that’s a phrase that’s ‘on trend’ right now, isn’t it?!) weather that’s an interview, or in-house chat based upon a feature or discussion point.

While I am a big music fan, I have plenty of CDs, so beyond hearing the occasional track that has the novelty element of being blasted through a giant compressor unit, I like to hear speech based features, as this is the live, instantaneous content that creates interest, especially while driving, as this is the situation where I find radio the most engaging.

Wait, what was the question?

Right, yes, so there are a variety of radio programmes that capture this group interaction and features that I find myself drawn to. The XFM breakfast show is packed full of entertaining features that utilise all the members of the ‘team’, as well as plenty of listener involvement, the Radio 2 drivetime programme again captures a strong balance of voices, while Radio 5 Live’s Fighting Talk takes this to a whole new level, consisting of a barrage of voices and sharp wit thrown at you at 100mph over an hour on a Saturday. For a calmer listener experience I would tune in to Victoria Derbyshire, who in my opinion has the greatest radio voice out there. She could convince me of anything with her crisp, soothing, yet informative tones.

My favourite radio show is Chris Moyles on BBC Radio 1! And for the simple reason - he makes me LOL all the time!!
And of course, I get the Friday feeling when playing along to the ‘Guess the Year’ game every Friday morning! (Oh, and I ALWAYS win.)

My favourite show is The Huey Show on Sunday on BBC 6 Music. I love it because I usually listen after I’ve got back from long run and I need something to chill me out! His choice of Sunday jams always make me happy and his weekly guest always offers a really interesting insight into a random genre in the music industry. His accent is also super cool and he is probably one of the only remaining radio djs today who massively bigs up vinyl, which still sounds great on radio …
