  News Hooks:

The emerging national debate on well-being and much talk about plans for a ‘big society’ has meant that the word “community” is on everyone’s lips. A sense of community and a nice area to live continue to be high priority for Brits, yet 15% of people believe that poor financial situations have had a negative impact on their community.

Over two-thirds of Brits admit that being part of a community matters to them, yet 80% believe that a sense of community does not exist where they currently live. Despite this nearly three quarters (73%) have not used their spare time to help with community initiatives.

RBS Natwest are launching a CommunityForce initiative to help 158 communities throughout the UK. Each community will receive a fund of £18,000 which will be allocated equally to three local projects and good causes. Local people can decide on local projects that they feel will improve their community.

. Introduction:

In the recent debate on national well-being, the topic of “community” has emerged as being high on Britain’s priority list. The majority of Brits admit that being part of a community matters to them, but many fear that poor financial situations have had a negative impact on their community. Local organisations and charities that shape our communities are amongst the most affected and many local groups are struggling to gain the financial support they need to survive.

So if community is so important, what can local people do to help support local organisations and projects?

Joining us to discuss this further is Maxine Norris from the 2011 RBS Natwest CommunityForce Initiative.
